I’m in the midst of making work for a very personal project that reconnects me with parts of myself I haven’t explored in 16 years. I set out to reconnect with my ancestral homeland, a place that shaped so much of my identity, through analog film—mostly medium format. My priority in selecting this format was presence and slow intimate exchanges with the people and the culture.
At first Instagram felt obvious for sharing the work with the community of people who’ve been following my journey. Now, not so much. Although I haven’t seen a single frame and won’t for some time, I’m leaning more towards sharing the work offline in a book or solo exhibition when the time is right. How does one decide when the time is right?
This brings me to my final point. I thought the stories I gathered this trip would be the book in its entirety. What is beginning to resonate more and more is that this is merely chapter one. I don’t have an answer yet to the question of how the work deserves to be shared. I’m not yet able to judge when the time will be right. I do know that patience is required for me to allow the answers and the path to reveal themselves.
